The Threepenny Opera: A Modern Take On Longstanding Problems

http://clarencebrowntheatre.com/plays/the-threepenny-opera/

This week, the University of Tennessee’s Clarence Brown Theatre opens its production of The Threepenny Opera by Berthold Brecht and Kurt Weill. Though the play is often billed as a modern story of the haves versus the have-nots, the play actually has its roots in a work written by John Gay in the early 1700s, called The Beggar’s Opera.

CBT Director Cal MacLean sat down with WUOT’s Chrissy Keuper to talk about the play’s history and its modern relevance…

Chrissy served as WUOT's News Director and host of monthly public affairs talk show Dialogue from late 2021 to early 2023. Her first job with the station was as weekend student announcer while earning her bachelor's in Anthropology from the University of Tennessee. She had previously been the station's local host for NPR's Morning Edition and All Things Considered news programs; occasionally filled in as host for WUOT's Morning and Afternoon Concerts; and won multiple awards for her interviews, feature stories, and Dialogue.
