This week, the University of Tennessee’s Clarence Brown Theatre opens its production of The Threepenny Opera by Berthold Brecht and Kurt Weill. Though the play is often billed as a modern story of the haves versus the have-nots, the play actually has its roots in a work written by John Gay in the early 1700s, called The Beggar’s Opera.
