The Tennessee Virtual Academy will start school next week, and will keep all its students. The virtual school opened in 2011 and is the state’s first online academy. Classes start Monday (4 August 2014) with 976 returning students and 626 new students.
The Union County School Board held an emergency workshop, voting unanimously to keep the new students. The Knoxville News Sentinel reports that Tennessee Education Commissioner Kevin Huffman previously said the school would be closed if the board allowed the new students to stay enrolled.
The school has been plagued by low performance scores since it opened in 2011. Huffman said unless student performance scores improve considerably, the online academy will have to close after the 2014 - 15 school year.
