Two Tennessee US legislators question a proposal now being considered by the Tennessee Valley Authority.
TVA officials are looking into a proposal to purchase wind-generated electricity from Clean Line Energy Partners in Oklahoma and then transport it to Memphis.
But US Senator Lamar Alexander and US Representative Stephen Fincher wrote to TVA CEO Bill Johnson this week. They’re concerned that the move isn’t the best option for clean and cheap electricity; that the purchase would increase security threats to the utility’s system; and that that the purchase would mean higher rates for TVA customers, especially if Congress fails to renew the wind-power tax credit this year (it expired at the end of 2013).
TVA officials say they’ll carefully assess the proposal.
