New Legislation Gives Morgan County Chance To Develop Former Prison

The now-closed Brushy Mountain State Prison could see new life from new state legislation.

The state decommissioned the prison in Morgan County five years ago. Now, new legislation gives the county the chance to develop the retired prison, in a plan that includes a distillery, gift shops, and horse stables.

A requirement of the measure is that the state’s finance commissioner must decide the final plans for development are in the state’s best interest and any revenue must be used to help pay off the bonds issued toward developing the property.
