Knoxville opera presents Bizet's "Carmen"

Knoxville Opera is presenting a production of one of the most frequently performed operas of all time: Bizet's Carmen.  Performances are Friday, February 13th at 8pm and Sunday, the 15th at 2:30pm.  Morning Concert host, Melony Dodson, talked with two of visiting artists in this production: soprano Zulimar Lopez-Hernandez, who is singing the role of  Micaela, and bass-baritone, Ryan Kuster, who is portraying the role of Escamillo.  This sensuously romantic opera boasts some of the most recognizable tunes in the opera repertoire, gypsies, bullfighters, colorful costumes, and fiery dances.

Melony calls the beautiful mountains of Boone, N.C., home, although she was born near Greensboro, N.C. There’s just something about those Blue Ridge Mountains that got in her blood and never left after she moved there to attend Appalachian State University (ASU). While at ASU, she majored in piano performance and music therapy and began to cultivate a love for accompanying and for collaborating with other musicians. This soon led her to earn a master’s degree in collaborative piano at the University of Tennessee, which she attended from 2006-2008.
