The Knox County Commission has voted to investigate a special fund run by the Knox County Schools.

The County Commission gave initial approval to an audit of the Knox County school system’s Physical Plant Upgrade budget.

A formal commission vote is expected March 24th.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports that Commissioner Jeff Ownby called for the investigation, saying he was having trouble getting fiscal records from the school system. Ownby has called the PPU budget a “slush fund” that allows the school system to keep money that it would otherwise be expected to return to the county at the end of the fiscal year.

Results from the audit could take four to six weeks.
