In October, 2014, the E.W. Scripps Company and the Knoxville News Sentinel shut down the beloved Knoxville independent newspaper, Metro Pulse. The company offered employees a severance agreement, but three former writers for the paper have torn up their severance agreements and are starting a brand new newspaper in February, The Knoxville Mercury, as part of a new non-profit, the Knoxville History Project.
