Grammy Award-Winning Vocal Ensemble, Chanticleer, Performs In Knoxville

Called "the world's reigning male chorus" by The New Yorker and also the first vocal ensemble to be inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame, the San Francisco based Grammy award-winning ensemble, Chanticleer, comes to Knoxville this Monday evneing to perform music about love. The title of the program is "My Secret Heart" and it will be presented at 8pm at Knoxville's Church of the Ascension, located at 800 S Northshore Drive.

Founded in 1978, this twelve-member male choir performs music of every style, ranging from Renaissance to jazz and popular genres, as well as contemporary works. Since Chanticleer began releasing recordings in 1981, the group has sold well over a million albums and has won two Grammy awards. Additionally, through their educational outreach program, the group inspires thousands of young people each year to sing with their hearts, while striving for excellence.

In this interview, Melony Dodson chats with Knoxville-native, Brian Hinman, who has sung tenor with Chanticleer for eleven years.

Melony calls the beautiful mountains of Boone, N.C., home, although she was born near Greensboro, N.C. There’s just something about those Blue Ridge Mountains that got in her blood and never left after she moved there to attend Appalachian State University (ASU). While at ASU, she majored in piano performance and music therapy and began to cultivate a love for accompanying and for collaborating with other musicians. This soon led her to earn a master’s degree in collaborative piano at the University of Tennessee, which she attended from 2006-2008.
