The historic district north of the University of Tennessee's Knoxville campus is the latest neighborhood to top Knox Heritage's annual "Fragile 15" list of endangered structures and places. Knox Heritage officials say several of Fort Sanders' historically significant buildings are being threatened by absentee landlords, as well as ambitious expansion plans by the University of Tennessee and the Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. Meanwhile, the Kerns-Sara Lee bakery on Chapman Highway made its debut on this year's list. The bakery has been producing bread, buns and mouth-watering aromas since it opened in 1931. But brand owner Bimbo Bakeries of Pennsylvania closed it down last May, citing the facility's age and its inability to "compete in the marketplace."
