The Knoxville News Sentinel asked B&W Y-12 and the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board about exterior cracks found during an August survey at the Highly Enriched Uranium Materials Facility.
The federal assessment concluded that the cracks were probably caused by concrete shrinkage after construction and that they shouldn’t impact the strength of the walls.
Officials with B&W Y-12 say they’re continuing to monitor the situation.
The building is the storage facility for the nation’s primary stockpile of weapons-grade uranium.
