If you’re interested in doing sales in East Tennessee, there are still plenty of opportunities. At the same time, it wouldn’t hurt to brush up on your science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills.
A Brookings Institute analysis of Knoxville job openings during the first quarter of 2013 finds those jobs classified in the “sales or related profession” field are still the most common. However, a full 33 percent of the 2153 job ads demanded some STEM skills.
The report also shows the need for an advanced education. Nearly a quarter (23.5%) of the job ads were searching for candidates with STEM skills and at least a bachelor’s degree.
While sales jobs were the most common among the ads analyzed, jobs requesting candidates in the fields of forestry, farming, fishing and law were the least common.
