The East Tennessee Listening Project

In the news media, we spend a good deal of time talking. But we're not always so good at listening.

The East Tennessee Listening Project is designed to turn traditional models of journalism on their head.  We want to know what you think is important.  And we're developing new, innovative ways to find out what's on your mind:

TruckBeat is a new public media storytelling experiment about the issues that matter most to people across Knoxville and East Tennessee.

It's a collaboration between independent public radio reporter Jess Mador, and WUOT – one of 15 projects around the country launching as part of AIR's Localore: #FindingAmericainitiative.

As we launch TruckBeat, we're starting with a look at health, particularly East Tennessee's addiction crisis, obesity, mental health, and access to health care and treatment.

We want to hear from you. Tell us what you think we should investigate here: http://truckbeat.org/

The local crowdsourcing project that started it all, tennwords has been asking East Tennesseans to telling us their thoughts, ideas and concerns– by answering specific questions in ten words or less.

In its initial phase in 2015, tennwords received more than 700 responses to the question “What keeps you up at night?”

Answers ranged from the bizarre and humorous to the deeply personal and even tragic.  Analysis of the answers uncovered a general concern about health, family and something else.

In the coming months, tennwords will begin to formulate new questions to explore the issues that you find most important in your life.
