Middle Tennesseans Begin Preparations For New Area Code

  Since 1995, the 615 area code has been synonymous with Nashville and its surrounding areas.  That will soon change.

Nashville’s rapid population growth and the emergence of cell phones and other communication devices means the 615 code will soon run out of phone numbers.  Beginning in March, all new phone numbers from within the existing 615 area code will contain the new code 629.

Annual Kids Count Report: Tennessee Child Welfare Improves

An annual assessment of child well-being in the United States finds Tennessee has made some strides forward in the last decade, but not in every measure.

Tennessee's children are faring better in education and health care, according to the Annie E. Casey Foundation's Kids Count report, issued this morning. The report compared child welfare in Tennessee according to sixteen standards measured in 2005 and again in 2012 and 2013. The state improved in ten of those 16 categories, worsened in five categories, and remained unchanged in one.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park Keeps Title As Most-Visited In U.S.

A new report from the National Park Service and the US Geological Survey shows the Great Smoky Mountains National Park keeps its place as the most visited national park in the US, with more than 9,350,000 visitors last year.

Oak Ridge Museum Faces Uncertain Future

  The city of Oak Ridge and the foundation that supports the American Museum of Science and Energy (AMSE) are asking the public for ideas on how to best preserve one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions. 

City officials and the AMSE Foundation are planning a community forum on Thursday, July 24 to discuss the museum’s future.

Prescription Drug Campaign Makes Stop In Knoxville Today

A state-sponsored effort to address Tennessee’s spiraling rate of prescription drug abuse comes to East Tennessee today as part of a statewide tour.  Tennessee’s Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services Commissioner Doug Varney and other addiction experts have been traveling the state this summer to draw attention to what they’re calling an “epidemic”, while highlighting specific strategies designed to bring it under control.

A study of America's non-interstate rural roads ranks Tennessee high for fatal accidents and travel fatality rate on rural roads.

Tennessee is among the top 11 states for fatal accidents on rural roads. The state also ranks in the top 6 in the US for fatality rate per 100 million miles traveled.
