Emancipation Day

On this day in 1863, Tennessee's military governor Andrew Johnson freed his personal slaves. During the early part of the 20th century, blacks in East Tennessee celebrated on August 8th by staying home from work and gathering with their families. Many in Knoxville visited the city's most popular park---the only day of the year they were allowed to do so.
