The Peace Movement

The Iraq War often seems to be one of numbers---320 billion dollars spent, more than 2500 US troops killed and over 18,000 wounded. Iraqi civilian deaths are estimated from 5,000 to well over 10,000. And the mounting cost of the war has energized the peace movement in the United States. As with the earlier conflict in Vietnam, it's led by young people and veterans of the war. Last Stop at Deer Lodge

In recent years, "boot camps" for teenage delinquents have gotten a lot of bad publicity for their harsh methods of dealing with defiant teens. In some cases, campers have suffered severe and even fatal injuries. Social Change in Bolivia

Cultural researchers have long found similarities in mountain communities around the world. Jack Herranen is a member of the Tennessee Economic Renewal Network. He currently lives in Bolivia, and is studying the commonalities of social change in the Andes and the Southern Appalachians.
