WUOT FM, the public radio station licensed to the University of Tennessee and located on the UTK campus in Knoxville, seeks a full-time Chief Engineer. We are looking for the individual who can lead WUOT FM technologically, from maintaining our two transmitters and studio facilities to helping us plan and grow for the future.
WUOT will provide office space, computer and appropriate equipment, etc. for use by the Chief Engineer. Other materials may be provided at the discretion of management.
The Chief Engineer is responsible for the absolute overall technical operation of 91.9FM WUOT/WUOT HD2, internal and external to the WUOT studios. This position maintains in working order the main and backup radio transmitters and all equipment at the transmitter sites to ensure proper, Federal Communications Commission (FCC)-required operation. The Chief Engineer must ensure proper operation of equipment located at various points on campus, so that there is no interruption in broadcast from the WUOT studios to both transmitter sites. At the WUOT studios, this position works with the WUOT operations department to maintain proper operation of all broadcast equipment, including studio consoles and equipment, internet streaming hardware, broadcast-network IT systems, radio automation, etc.. The Chief Engineer is available 24/7/365, in the case of station emergencies that require his/her technical expertise. This position will also train various WUOT staff on broadcast and non-broadcast procedures, pertaining to the FCC-mandated operation of a broadcast radio station. The Chief Engineer must stay abreast of the latest information and rulings issued by the FCC. At times, the Chief Engineer diagnoses, often with the assistance of the university’s OIT department, staff computers not related to station broadcast operations.
Bachelor’s Degree in Electronics, Engineering or related field, but experience will substitute. Minimum of seven years of experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience, in technical and infrastructure management, such as design and construction of radio transmitting facilities, satellite earth terminals. microwave transmission systems, fiber optic systems and the architecture of computer and computer network IT systems. Experience with audio over IP broadcast equipment and broadcast radio automation.
Experience in leading the engineering department of a broadcast radio/television facility; familiarity with Axia/Telos audio over IP equipment and technology, ENCO Automation, Allegiance Software (Traffic and/or Membership), SolarWinds IT Software, MusicMaster, and WireShark software.
University of Tennessee Pay Grade 42, full-time, exempt, DOE&Q.
